To see, not merely to learn : education, freedom, and the gaze that shapes

What does it mean to see clearly before habit, fear, authority and ambition decide what is worth seeing?

In To See, Not Merely to Learn, Sherko Jahani Asl examines education as more than the transfer of knowledge. Taking Jiddu Krishnamurti as a central point of departure, the book explores how schools, social expectations, competition, assessment and authority shape not only what people learn, but also how they understand themselves and the world.

Bringing philosophy, educational thought, psychology, literature and lived experience into dialogue, the book asks difficult questions: Can knowledge grow while sensitivity declines? When does guidance become dependence? What happens when achievement becomes a measure of human worth? Can education create freedom without abandoning structure and responsibility?

This is not a handbook and does not offer ready-made solutions. It is a philosophical and educational inquiry into attention, fear, freedom, self-understanding and the possibility of a more humane form of learning. Written for teachers, students, parents and reflective readers, it invites us to reconsider what education is for, what kind of human being it helps to form, and whether learning can become an act of seeing rather than mere accumulation.
